For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology (FIRST) was first founded in 1989. FIRST, the program that started with only 28 teams, has now reached to over 150,000 kids. Gracious Professionalism, which is part of the ethos of FIRST, encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community. The two phrases, “Gracious Professionalism” and "Coopertition" are unique to the FIRST Robotics experience. Dean Kaman, the founder of FIRST Robotics created and trademarked these phrases as they embody the focuses of the FIRST Robotics Program, to compete in a gracious yet professional manner with other teams, mentors, judges, and officials; and to cooperate with other schools while still maintaining that competitive drive. Reaching past the traditional boundaries of the high school sport, the FIRST Robotics Program takes the normal robotics competition and boosts it up to the varsity level challenging members to not only compete to win; but, to also compete for a better future of science, technology, engineering and math.
